Family Vacation: Meatball Challenge

24 Jun

There are a lot of facts I know about my Mother, for example:

1. She loves Rod Stewart.

2. She prefers red wine.

3. She does not cook.

It’s just a fact of life. My mother is not one of those people who views an afternoon in the kitchen as “fun”. In fact her opinion is that the more time she spends in the kitchen, the less time she can sit on the beach… it’s a valid point.

However, I am quite the opposite. Ever since traveling to Italy, I love to cook. It’s like any art form to me, I spend the afternoon creating something yummy.

So last night, my mom was fixing “Italian Night” at the beach house. For her this meant as follows:

1. Open bag of frozen meatballs

2. Dump in crock pot

3. Pour in Prego

4. Turn it on and walk away

Now there is nothing wrong with this method. But for someone who appreciates a homemade meal, I felt there was room for improvement. So my mother posed a challenge; I would spend my afternoon making home made tomato sauce and mozzarella stuffed meatballs and we would have a taste test against her frozen Italian special.

It was on.

Here is my tomato sauce recipe (It’s super easy):

Total time: 2 hours

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 8 oz fresh mushrooms
  • 3 28 oz cans of crushed tomatoes (no added flavoring or salt)
  • 3 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • a little fresh basil

Just saute the onions and mushroom with garlic in the olive oil in a large pot for about 20- 25 minutes. Then add crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, parmesan cheese, and red wine. Let this simmer for 1.5- 2 hours and you have easy homemade sauce! (Don’t forget to add salt and pepper to taste)

But the real star of this meal is my mozzarella stuffed meatballs. They are super easy and a huge crowd pleaser.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Lb (each) ground beef and ground pork (yesterday I couldn’t find ground pork so I used ground turkey and it worked out just fine!)
  • 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2-3 eggs
  • 1 large onion
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Lots of fresh mozzarella (whatever you don’t put in the meatballs, use as an appetizer!)

Image

Luckily I sort of had some help from these peeps.

I should also apologize for my horrendously unsanitary cooking apparel, we’re at the beach– so I have to bum it. But everyone’s hands were clean!

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Add to large mixing bowl. Then add in Worcestershire sauce and spices. Then incorporate ground meat. Add eggs and parmesan cheese then begin to mix gently by hand. As you mix slowly incorporate bread crumbs until the mixture is as desired consistency (may need more or less depending on circumstances).

Once mixture is finished, recruit some help and start forming the meatballs.

Image

The mozzarella should be cut into small pieces no bigger than a marble. Take a small amount of the meat mixture, form a pocket, insert the mozzarella, and seal it up well. The meatball should be about the size of a small golf ball (do those exist?)

Image

Line them on a rack inside of a baking dish (I didn’t have a rack so I just made due). Bake them for 30 minutes at 350. When they are out of the oven, add them to your simmering tomato sauce and let them marry together until everyone is ready to eat.

Image

You know, just me being attentive and such.

The best part of this experience was the blind taste test. My Aunt Sue lined everyone up, put a pillow case over their eyes and had them choose which meatball and sauce they liked better… Just saying 11 out of 12 people picked mine (clearly my uncle Mike has bad taste!) By the end of my night, all of my meatballs were gone and we still had a crock pot full of my mom’s.

The moral of the story is: put love in, get love out.

Also, I love my mom.

High Five For Friday!

21 Jun

I’ve been feeling particularly thankful for all of the blessings in my life lately.

So I thought I would make mention of the highlights of my week!

Image

First of all, is anyone else proud of my photo shop skills? Clearly art school is teaching me something!

1. I had a blast at my first ever tailgate with my new friends of summer. I can tell the summer of 2013 is going to be one for the books as long as I’ll be with these people.

2. For the first time in the almost 6 months that I have lived in this apartment, my room mate’s dog decided we can be friends. Unfortunately he only does this when no one else is home, but it’s progress right?!

3. I managed to get out for some “Me time” on Wednesday. I went for a run in Fairmount park, and everything was beautiful. This is becoming one of my favorite things to do!

4. The conversations my sisters and I have get me through the week.

5. Speaking of sisters, I get to see these weirdos this weekend! Finally, it feels like it’s been forever.

I hope everyone is having as happy of a week as I am!

Whatever a Sun will Always Sing is You.

Image

This is my all time favorite poem.

It’s called “I Carry Your Heart” by E.E Cummings

One can never go looking for inspiration, it shows itself in unassuming places. For me, I gathered this piece of thought in a second hand book store, on a date with myself. One of my favorite things to do is grab a cup of coffee and get lost in some creative writing, these words for me stem into every realm of creativity.

How hopelessly artistic and forever alone do I sound right now?

But really though, this poem got me through my sophomore year of college.

Image

It brought me to this painting.

This is actually a small fraction of this 6 foot painting. It’s a portrait of my Grandma (I call her Gma, or Fay-zie, or girlfriend… she’s my best friend) But in a later stage of this painting I added in a quote from this poem.

2 years later I came across this poem again. Just when I needed it, as inspiration always does.

Now, the question is, what to do with it?

Can I Borrow Some Phillies Swag?

18 Jun

Everyone I know makes fun of me for how little I know about any Philadelphia sports team. I honestly couldn’t tell you anything about the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, 76ers, anyone! But when I have the opportunity to get together with friends, I’ll be there.

Image

I truly love these guys.

A bunch of my friends from my new job packed up their cars and tailgated a Phillies game yesterday. It was a blast! I honestly couldn’t tell you who won the game, just that we played the Nationals. I’m pretty sure the Phillies won because everyone was in a really good mood.

We were pretty sloppy, but it was a great time!

The Barnes Foundation: I Think He Had a Man- Crush on Renoir

17 Jun

My summer session Art History class, “Picasso and the Modern Masters” brought me on my first trip to the Barnes Foundation.

Image

Which is actually pretty funny considering I’ve been living in this city for years, and have visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art a million times, yet I have not made it to the Barnes which right down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from the PMA.

I actually work at the PMA once a month with the Family Programs Department, but that’s another story.

Image

The story behind the Barnes Foundation is strange. Dr. Albert Barnes was a Philadelphia native who became immensely wealthy at a very young age. As a chemist he discovered a remedy for infants contracting gonorrhea from their mothers, his method is still used today. So he used his riches to collect art, LOTS of it. It’s actually fairly obnoxious.

He covered the walls of his home in famous works by Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, and particularly Renoir. Everywhere you look there is more and more Pierre Auguste Renoir. I mean, I’m not complaining, he is one of my favorites, but after 3 floors of it, it becomes a little much.

I do love me some Renoir.

Dr. Barnes made himself the artist by arranging his art. So when the museum moved from Chestnut Hill to Center City Philly, it was most important to leave the displays as Barnes had.

Image

It’s 3 floors of this, see what I mean by a little much?

With all of these priceless works squished together with no room to breathe, none of them really get the respect they deserve. But I guess when you’re a gazillionaire you can hang your art however you want.

All that being said, getting lost in the Barnes is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, especially if you have a crush on Renoir like me and Dr. Barnes!

With Love From Afghanistan

17 Jun

I have a very dear friend.

Image

This probably isn’t his most flattering picture… or mine for that matter.

His name is David, he is a U.S Marine, and has been stationed in Afghanistan for almost a year now. Thankfully he is expected to be home at the end of the summer! But that is always up in the air.

All of his friends back in the States (including me!) have been writing to him, to try and help him feel loved, because he really is. Although his situation can be pretty scary sometimes, it seems like he is seeing some really interesting places. In my letters, I feel like I am trying to make his deployment sound more like world traveling with questions like “How’s the food?” and “Did you meet a nice girl?!”

Well anyway, the other day I received a package all the way from Afghanistan…

Image

It was full of beautiful scarves!

David identifies me as an “artsy” girl and I guess to a marine “artsy” equates to “must wear scarves”. He knows me so well!

Opening this package, alone in my kitchen, at 2 AM caused the biggest smile my face has seen in a long time.

I sincerely can not wait for him to come home.

To Afghanistan:

With love,

Let’s Go See Some Art Shall We?

14 Jun

Moving to Philadelphia was a strategic decision for me 3 years ago. I come from rural Pennsylvania where their idea of art is barn decoration. So, in an attempt to become more cultured, I moved to mega- city full of museums, galleries, artists, and opportunities. To be honest, I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. And sometimes, I still feel like I know nothing about my city. The art scene is an ever- evolving enigma to me. Once you grasp one thing there is something new to see.

So last week James and I took a trip to see an opening at a Gallery run by our professor, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, in center city Philly. Like most awesome places in Philly, it is particularly unassuming from the outside, just an old warehouse. But open the door and you’re entering the artistic “speak- easy” of Philly; the most cutting edge sculpture, video work, printmaking, photos, and paintings.

Image

I feel so “Sex and the City” at things like this.

I enjoy a good night out, seeing lots of art with a good friend. But While scanning the rooms of highly politically charged and abstract work, I feel pretty lost. As an artist myself, it is particularly frustrating to feel as if the concept of a work is totally lost on me. I wander the galleries and formally analyze work, but 95% of the time, I have no idea what it means.

Image

James always seems to understand everything… or so he says.

I’m beginning to question if I even want to be part of the “fine art conversation” to begin with. I feel as though my brain is more wired towards an educational standpoint, and the goal of my work is to always remain accessible and approachable to anyone. I never want my work to appear pretentious or exclusive to any audience.

Which is why I am so excited to be shifting gears from painting (which I will always continue to do) to a larger focus on functional pottery. My biggest complement is someone choosing to incorporate my art into their daily life; hanging my painting in their kitchen, using my mug for their morning coffee, anything. I have no desire to gain artistic recognition for this work, I just wish to quietly add beauty to the ordinary.

I’m working on researching different clay bodies, functional forms, and glaze techniques. And I’m hoping to get myself into the studio next week. Wish me luck!
